Friends and family of a government volunteer doctor from Aklan who was killed in Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte had expressed their collective grief and demanded justice.

Dr. Dreyfuss Bolivar Perlas, 31, native of Poblacion, Batan, Aklan was killed by unknown assailants while he was riding a motorbike along the national highway of Purok 4 in Maranding, Kapatagan at around 7 p.m. on March 1.

In search for justice, Perlas’ friends and family have also taken the Facebook and other social media.

“Your service to the people of Sapad is unmatched. You go out of your way to help them. You treat dehydrated patients in your health center, giving them IV fluids. You personally attend to deliveries. You fetch mothers and their recently born babies from the hinterlands to your health center in order to be observed for complications. You accompany patients you refer to higher institutions and even pay for ambulance and other fees if they can't afford,” Jordan Pinzon wrote in his Facebook.

“A graduate of top tier institutions serving away from family shot to death without any apparent reason,” said Ralph Blgln.

"Dr. Perlas was a rarity, having both the competencies and demeanor suited for a career in public health. People like Drey represent an immense value to our society, and the compensation he received for this is a bullet to the heart," added Jorrel Vincent Valdez.

Mary Ann Salazar Lopez, a retired teacher and neighbor of Perlas family in Batan, Aklan, said she was deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Perlas.

“I can still remember the last time we meet in Batan during Fathers Day celebration last December where his Uncle Isot was the Father of the Year he came to me and kiss me on my cheek, that's how he greeted me every time we meet,” she said.

Lopez said “Dr. Perlas is a good person, down to earth, respectful and loving guy.”

“I even asked him why he did not transfer here in our province since he is very far from his family, he responded me na okay naman doon.”

Amabel Abella Cortes, also a native of Batan, Aklan, described Perlas as “a real doctor at heart who served the poor.”

“We, Batangnons, still cannot get over the chance of your untimely, senseless death,” she said.

Perlas was on his way home from Sapad to Purok 4, Barangay Maranding in Lala, Lanao del Norte, where he has a boarding house, when the shooting incident happened.

Upon reaching the dark portion of the highway, Perlas was shot at the left portion of his back by the suspects who were also riding in an unidentified vehicle.

Chief Inspector Melvin Loquinte, chief of police of Kapatagan, said, "the suspects fled towards the direction of Maranding in Lala and a hot pursuit operation led by Senior Police Officer 1 Pether Dionsion was conducted but lost track of the continuing fleeing direction."

Police recovered in the crime scene an empty shell of .45 caliber and Perlas’ blue motorcycle with plate number KA 98877. The suspects are still unidentified and at large.

Perlas was brought to Lanao del Norte provincial hospital in the adjacent town of Kapatagan, but was declared dead on arrival by attending physicians.

Two days before he was killed, Perlas joined the Philippine Army’s 15th Infantry Battalion in One-Stop-Shop Medical Mission in Barangay Karkum in Sapad.

Perlas finished his medicine in West Visayas State University in 2011 and his biology course in 2006 in University of the Philippines Los Banos.

Dr. Drey, the eldest son of Batan Sangguniang Bayan member Dennis Perlas, has been a municipal health officer of the second-class municipality of Kapatagan since October 2011. He was part of Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP)-Master in Public Management-Health Systems Development (MPM-HSD) Batch 30.
