A modern double “AA’ accredited slaughterhouse that
would service the domestic market will be built in the town of Kalibo.
Municipal
Planning and Development Coordinator Engr. Marlo Villanueva said the Department
of Agriculture through National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) had
allotted P10-million for the construction of the slaughterhouse in Barangay
Tinigaw in Kalibo, Aklan.
Villanueva said negotiation for the purchase
of lot for the proposed abattoir is on the final stage, which is the
counterpart of the municipal government of Kalibo.
The lot is adjacent to the existing slaughterhouse, he added.
To make the slaughterhouse profitable for
Kalibo, the facilities must be upgraded to conform to Good Manufacturing
Practice (GMP) based on standards of NMIS.
Villanueva
said the new abattoir will enhance the operations and the capability to supply higher
quality and safe meat and meat products.
The facility, managed and operated by the
Municipal Economic Enterprise and Development Office, will be equipped with
modern mechanized slaughtering and holding pen facilities, among others.
Slaughterhouses rated AA have facilities and
operational procedures that could process meat suitable for sale in any local
or national market.
The
current Kalibo municipal slaughterhouse, which averages 100-hogs a day, also has
an ongoing rehabilitation being prioritized by the administration of Mayor
William Lachica.
The
municipal government will tap the services of the water district for an
abundant supply of potable water for adequate hygiene and disposal, the mayor
said.
