KALIBO, Aklan - The provincial board of canvassers proclaimed the winners of the first-ever automated elections in Aklan on Thursday morning.
Incumbent Governor Carlito Marquez, who is also the provincial chairman of Tibyog Akean, swept all the 17 towns of Aklan – eastern and western side – pulling an expected victory against his closest rival Leovigildo Mationg of Lapiang Manggagawa.
Although, former Manila treasurer Anthony Acevedo has filed his candidacy for governor, the race for Aklan’s chief executive post is between Marquez and Mationg.
According to Commission on Elections' count of the May 10, 2010 elections, Marquez marched its way to a landslide victory with a commanding 166,099 votes over Mationg, who got 40,895 votes, while Acevedo garnered 5,140 votes.
In the vice gubernatorial post, the provincial board of canvassers also proclaimed reelectionist Gabrielle Calizo-Quimpo of Nacionalista Party-Kusog it Akean with 126,981 votes. The incumbent lady vice governor won against Partido ng Masang Pilipino candidate Roberto Garcia, Jr. who received 66,776 votes.
The Comelec also proclaimed Florencio Miraflores, running mate of Marquez as congressman of the lone district of Aklan with 178,190 votes. Miraflores, who has been at the helm of the province since 2004, is serving his third term. The solon was first elected as mayor of Ibajay in early 1990’s. From 1995 to 2001, he served as governor of Aklan.
Even before the votes were cast, the three political leaders are enjoying the support and trust of majority of the Aklanons. On September 12 last year, Tibyog Akean and Kusog it Akean, two of the dominant local parties in Aklan, forged a united leadership coalition ‘for a common vision of development and the march to continued progress.’
Meanwhile, the front-runners in the race for Aklan Sangguniang Panlalawigan are Nemesio Neron (Lakas-Kampi), Daisy Briones (Lakas-Kampi), Raymar Rebaldo (Bagong Bayan-NP), Jean Rodriguez (Lakas-Kampi), Rodson Mayor (Lakas-Kampi) for the Eastern side, Jose Enrique Miraflores (Lakas-Kampi), Selwyn Ibarreta (Lakas-Kampi), Phoebe Clarice Cabagnot (PMP), Gerick Templonuevo (Lakas-Kampi) and Victor Manuel Garcia (PMP) for the Western side.
Aklan has 316,040 registered voters in this elections, of which 246,002 voters cast their votes in 492 automated clustered polling precincts last Monday throughout the province.
Witnessing the proclamation rites were the candidates’ families and supporters, local media and government employees at the Aklan Sangguniang Panlalawigan session hall.
