Five Aklan woodpushers in national age group, juniors chess tourney

KALIBO, Aklan – Five Aklanon chess players will represent the province of Aklan in the National Age Group Chess Championships on May 15 to 19 and the National Juniors Championship on May 20 to 24 in Davao City.
Provincial Sports Coordinator Wilfredo Neri said the youth chess players will vie for top honors in six age categories for both boys and girls divisions.
Mira Mirano (1790) will play for 14 years and below, Abby Bianca Garingalao for 12 years and below and Naome Gwyne Ramos for 10 years and below.
Susan Grace Neri and Kevin Mirano (1821) will also suit up for the juniors chess championship on May 20 to 24 at the Gaisano Mall in Davao City. The juniors champion will earn the right to represent the Philippines in the ASEAN Juniors in Chenai, India.
The winners for the seven or five-round Swiss system juniors chess tourney will pocket P15,000 and trophy in the boys division and P10,000 and trophy in the girls division.
Organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) in cooperation with the Davao city government, the national age group chessfest in NCCC Mall Activity Center is open to all chess players where the top three in each category will represent the country in the 11th Asean Age-Group Chess Championship in Subic Bay, Olongapo City on June 4 to 13, 2010.
The champion in each category will receive P5,000 and trophy, the runner-up P3,000 and trophy, P2,000 and trophy to the third placer, P1,000 to the fourth placer and P500 to the fifth placer.
Last year, Mirano topped the under 12-year-old girls category in the National Age-Group Chess Championships held at the Victory Central Mall in Caloocan City, Metro Manila.
She also captured the bronze in the Standard chess open Girls 12 category in the 10th Asean Age-Group Chess Championships in Thua Thien-Hue, Vietnam from June 6 to 15, 2009.
Mirano, Ramos and Garingalao are members of the all-girls Aklan team "E", Kevin Mirano is a member of Aklan team "B" in the recent 2010 Inter-Provincial Chess Team Championship hosted by the province of Aklan on April 11 to 15 while the younger Neri is a member of the Dela Salle University Women's chess team.
