KALIBO, Aklan – The construction of the 6.5-hectares Aklan Sports Complex in Barangay Calangcang in the town of Makato will continue after the successful staging of this year’s edition of the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet.
Provincial Engineer Victory Fernandez said the perimeter fence for the sports complex will soon be constructed through the P5-M funding allocated by Aklan Rep. Florencio Miraflores. He said future plans could possibly include an enclosed fence around the all weather rubberized tracks.
The sports complex, the main venue of WVRAA 2010 from March 14 to 19, boosts of main grandstand, Olympic standard swimming pool and track and field oval for athletics events. Most of the running events take place in a typical red urethane outdoor oval and field events on the infield, within the circumferential rubberized surface. The inner field of the Aklan Sports Complex has a grass surface for the field events.
Aklan Governor Carlito Marquez said the provincial government will also start constructing additional covered courts to complement the existing sports facilities in the sports complex.
“By 2012, Aklan is expected to host the regional athletic meet, attracting the best athletes in Western Visayas, to compete in our state-of-the-art facilities,” he said.
The sports complex is a joint venture of the Aklan State University (ASU) and the provincial government. Last year, Marquez and ASU president Dr. Benny Palma signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to construct and rehabilitate the sprawling sports complex.
The governor said the collaborative efforts of the provincial government and the Department of Education contributed to the successful staging of WVRAA in Aklan where the Aklanons also showcased their hospitality and courtesy to more than 3,000 athletes and officials.
Aklan province last hosted the regional sporting events on March 1995 during the term of Aklan Governor Corazon L. Cabagnot.
