Negros, Iloilo dominate secondary athletics

KALIBO, Aklan – Powerhouse teams from Negros Occidental and Iloilo dominated the athletic competitions in the secondary divisions at the close of 2010 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet at Aklan Sports Complex.
Negros had seven golds, six silvers and six bronzes for 137 points to finish ahead of Iloilo, which had four golds, six silvers and seven bronzes for 121 points in the secondary boys division. The host province of Aklan went home in third place with 93 points with five golds, four silvers and two bronzes.
Negros amassed gold medals in 110 hurdles, long jump, 4 x 100m relay, discus throw, 100 meters, triple jump and 200 meters while Iloilo in javelin throw, 400 meter hurdles, shotput and 400 meters. Aklan was a distant third with gold medals in high jump, 800 meters, 1,500 meters, 4 x 400m relay, 3,000 meters for 93 points.
In the secondary boys, Iloilo completed its romp with golds in the 5,000 meters, high jump, 400 meters, shotput, 4 x 100m relay, 4 x 400 meters relay, 200 meters, 800 meters, pole vault, 100 meters, discus throw and 3,000 steeplechase. Iloilo got 12 golds, nine silvers and six bronzes for 185 points.
Negros bagged four golds in javelin throw, 1,500 meters, triple jump and long jump with seven silvers and five silvers for 117 points. Aklan won one silver in discus throw and bronze medals in high jump, 4 x 100m relay, javelin throw and triple jump for 52 points.
Antique earned a silver medal in 200 meters and a couple of bronze medals in 110m hurdles and 400 meters for 40 points while Capiz scored 33 points with gold medals in 400 hurdles and 110 meters hurdles, although the team finished fifth behind Iloilo, Negros, Aklan and Antique.
