A fire swept through the school classrooms of Lezo Integrated School (LIS) on December 17 in Lezo, Aklan, about 9 kilometers west of the capital town of Kalibo.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) estimated an initial P6.4-million damage after the blaze destroyed twelve school classrooms at around 8:45 p.m.

Firefighters from Kalibo, Numancia, Tangalan, Balete and Ibajay rushed to the fire scene after being alerted by Lezo municipal police station.

The town of Lezo still has no fire station up to now and is under the jurisdiction of BFP-Numancia.

The fire along A. Cahilig Street in Barangay Poblacion was raised to second alarm where it also engulfed the computer laboratory, school library, kindergarten classroom and the principal’s office.

About 7 fire trucks helped put out the fire. The fire spread quickly with the strong winds fanning it, Fire Officer I Enrico Nam-ay of BFP-Numancia said.

Nam-ay added they have yet to determine the extent of damage and origin of fire which was placed under control at 11 p.m. and fire out at 1 a.m.

“Under follow up pa ang fire incident. Malakas ang hangin, at masyadong mausok. Matagal na itong school sa Lezo na ginawa, mixed materials at ang kisame gawa sa kahoy,” Nam-ay added.

There were no casualties inside the premises that were razed, the BFP-Numancia said.

Personnel of Lezo municipal police station and emergency responders of Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Numancia also secured the area.

Residents near the school told arson investigators that electrical short circuit of a defective wall fan in Grade 3 classroom might be the caused of fire.
