DTI-Aklan celebrates consumer welfare month

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-Aklan) has lined up activities in celebration of Consumer Welfare Month this October. This year’s theme is “Making digital marketplaces fairer”.

DTI-Aklan provincial director Ma. Carmen Iturralde said the activities are Consumer Fun Run, consumer quiz bee and search for the best consumer advocacy program and DTI meets the media on consumerism.

The Consumer Fun Run is set on September 29 for the 3-km run from Estancia Elementary School, Kalibo and 5-km run from Numancia Public Market, Numancia to Kalibo Pastrana Park. Free registration is ongoing at DTI Aklan provincial office until September 25.

Consumer quiz bee is also opened to student-contestants from Grade 7-12 levels in public and private high schools. The contest will focus topics on Price Act, Consumer Act of the Philippines, Fair Trade laws, general information related to consumer welfare program and consumer month 2018 theme as well as topics on DTI mandate, functions and services.

Elimination rounds for cluster schools will start on October 4 in Ibajay Central School for Ibajay, Nabas, Buruanga and Malay schools and in Tangalan Elementary School for Makato, Tangalan, Lezo and Malinao schools. 

On October 9, elimination rounds for schools in Numancia, Kalibo, New Washington and Batan will take place in Kalibo Pilot Elementary School while schools in Banga, Balete, Altavas, Libacao and Madalag will battle for eliminations in Aguinaldo T. Repiedad Integrated School in Banga.

The provincial level consumer quiz bee for cluster schools winners is scheduled on October 19 at CityMall Kalibo.

DTI-Aklan also encouraged Grade 7-12 students to join the consumer advocacy program contest. The students should present their teaser/video/documentation of advocacies relevant to consumerism/consumer education and welfare.

The entries will be judged based on presentation, uniqueness/originality, implementation and impact and relevance to consumerism and consumer welfare.

Meanwhile, DTI-Aklan will be launching Negosyo Centers on September 26 in Nabas and on September 27 in Tangalan, bringing to 14 the total number of Negosyo Centers in the province of Aklan.

Ituralde is optimistic the remaining towns of Balete, Madalag and Batan will establish Negosyo Centers next year.
