A village chief in the northern town of Aklan was arrested in a police buy-bust operation on July 10.

Rodel Cambarihan, 44, resident of Barangay Aquino in Ibajay, Aklan allegedly sold a sachet of methamphetamine hydrochloride locally known as shabu to a poseur buyer for P1,000 at around 1:15 p.m. Monday.

Cambarihan was the first incumbent village chief in the province of Aklan nabbed by authorities in the intensified anti-drug campaign of the Philippine National Police (PNP) under the Project Double Barrel and Double Barrel Alpha Reloaded.

The suspect also yielded four more sachets of shabu during the body search, said Chief Inspector Frenzy Andrade, team leader of Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU).

Andrade said the suspect was ‘known’ in the area for his alleged involvement in illegal drug trade.

Joint operatives of PDEU, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) 6, Ibajay municipal police station and Aklan Provincial Public Safety Company conducted the buy-bust operation in Barangay Poblacion in Ibajay, Aklan which led to the arrest of Cambarihan.

Andrade further said the village chief has been under close surveillance for several months before the sting operation. The suspect allegedly got his supply in Iloilo and sold the drugs in Boracay Island and the towns of Buruanga, Malay and Ibajay.

Last year, Cambarihan voluntarily surrendered to Ibajay municipal police station during the Oplan Tokhang.

After his arrest, the suspect is detained at Kalibo police lock-up cell in the capital town of Kalibo.

He will be facing charges for violations of Section 5 (selling), a non-bailable offense, and Section 11 (illegal possession) of Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
