Boracay rescuers group bags national Gawad Kalasag

Volunteers and rescuers in the country were recognized at the 18th Gawad Kalasag (KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan) national awards.

The award winners included  Boracay Fire Rescue and Ambulance Volunteers (BFRAV), a 24/7 volunteer responder group stationed in Boracay Island and a partner organization of Joint Maritime Task Group “Protect”. 

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) through the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) spearheaded the recognition of local government units, hospitals, councils, individuals, civil society, volunteer organizations and groups for their outstanding contribution in implementing the DRRM to protect and shield high-risk communities against hazards and disasters. 

Assistant Secretary and OCD deputy administrator for operations Rodolfo Demosthenes Santillan presented the award to Rear Admiral Leonard Tirol, chief executive officer of BFRAV and adviser of Boracay Action Group for being the 2nd best volunteer organization during the awarding ceremony on June 8 at Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City. 

Davao Firefighter and Rescue Services, Inc. bagged the 1st place and Rescue and Emergency Provider on Disaster (Respond) of Agusan del Norte got 3rd place) for the best volunteer organization category.  

For Government Emergency Management Service (Basic), the award went to Disaster Action Response Team of Tarlac City while Capiz Emergency Response Team got second place.  

The province of Isabela took home the Best Provincial DRRM Council and Davao City for the Best City DRRM Council (highly urbanized). 

Further, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur bested La Trinidad, Benguet and Tubod, Lanao del Norte for the Best Municipal DRRM Council award (1st-3rd  class) while Tublay, Benguet was chosen the Best municipal DRRM council for 4th-6th class municipalities.  

The other winners included Sibog Katawhan Alang sa Paglambo, Inc. (SIKAP) for Best Civil Society Organization and Nagkahiusang Mangingisda sa Hinatuan, Inc. (NAMAHIN) for Best People’s Organization.  

Rescue 922 of Cauayan City, Isabela got the Government Emergency Management Service (Urban/Advance) category and Barangay Poblacion, Bago City in Negros Occidental for Best Barangay DRRM Committee (Urban).  

Two awardees were elevated to Hall of Fame, namely, Davao Firefighter and Rescue Services, Inc. (DFRS) for Best Volunteer Organization and Isabela Provincial Capitol Day Care Center for Best Early Learning Center (Urban). 

Private First Class Roel Dalaota of the Philippine Army (Heroic Act-Living), Director Alexander Madrigal (Special Recognition individual) and Tactical Operative Amphibious Drive (Special Recognition Group) also received GK special awards.
