Speculations are ripe that former
Banga mayor Antonio Maming will be running for public office in Kalibo, Aklan
in 2019. This after Maming transferred his registration record with the Commission
on Elections (Comelec) on Friday.
Former Banga mayor Antonio Maming |
Under
Section 39 of Republic Act 7160, a candidate must be a resident of the place where he seeks to be elected
at least one year immediately preceding election day.
Maming, with a residence in
Barangay Estancia, Kalibo, filed his “application to transfer registration
record due to change of residence” and as a registered voter from Banga to Kalibo with
the Provincial Comelec on March 10.
Maming lost in his bid in May
2016 elections against incumbent governor Florencio Miraflores. Maming’s wife
Erlinda won her second term as mayor of Banga, a neighboring town of Kalibo in
the eastern side.
Last month, the former mayor of
Banga confirmed he has parted ways with party mate and Aklan congressman Carlito
Marquez. He also decided to switch to the camp of Miraflores and former Aklan
solon Teodorico Haresco, Jr.
Maming’s recent decision likely
doesn’t sit well with the supporters of Marquez and incumbent Kalibo mayor
William Lachica. If Maming will seek the
mayoral seat in Kalibo, he will face the ‘anointed’ candidate of Lachica, who is
serving his third term in office.
Again, he refused to be swayed
by the possibility of pitting him in the mayoral derby in Kalibo.
