LTO deputizes 51 Aklan cops as traffic enforcers

BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

Beware erring motorists who have no respect for traffic laws.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has deputized policemen under the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO) to enforce traffic rules and regulations.

Police Officer I Jane Vega, assistant APPO information officer, said LTO regional director Dennis Singson enlisted 51 uniformed police officers from the municipal police stations including personnel from APPO.

The deputation of local policemen as traffic law enforcers aims to help the LTO-Aklan District Office implement the traffic regulations, a Bombo Radyo Kalibo report said.

Vega said the policemen will also assist the LTO to implement, in particular, the provisions of Republic Act No. 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.

Last April 17, Singson had a ceremonial distribution of LTO deputation identification cards and the temporary operator’s permit (TOP) for deputized agents in Aklan.

Only deputized policemen and the organic personnel of LTO district offices could lawfully apprehend and issue the required TOP for erring motorists.

Two months ago, the newly deputized police officers in Aklan completed the deputation training seminar and passed the written examinations of LTO Regional Office 6.

Vega said the PNP traffic enforcers are of big help in apprehending violators of national laws on transportation especially for the upcoming hosting of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial meetings in Aklan this May.

“Police can still apprehend traffic violators but they have to endorse the violators to LTO deputized traffic enforcers,” she added.

A Joint Administration Order (JAO) 2014-01 of the LTO/Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is being implemented to deter motorists from committing traffic violations, thus promoting safer and more orderly motoring.
