The
Metro Kalibo Water District (MKWD) assured its consumers in Aklan of enough potable
water supply in the onset of El Niño phenomenon this year.
El
Niño is expected to hit the country in June, the officials of the Philippine
Atmospheric, Geological and Astronomical Administration (Pagasa) said.
MKWD
general manager Edgar Isada said the Local Water Utilities Administration
(LWUA) is monitoring the potential adverse effects of El Niño on the operations
of water districts.
Isada
said, “the MKWD could supply enough water to its consumers for their daily
needs since its potable water comes from groundwater sources.”
But
Isada is urging the households in the service areas to conserve and to use water
responsibly during the El Niño and dry season.
The
water district is serving 25,000 consumers in Kalibo and the adjacent towns of New
Washington, Banga, Balete and portions of Batan.
The
water district sources its water supply from deep wells through its six pumping
stations in Kalibo and Banga.
MKWD,
categorized as Large Water District, has also a 1,000 cubic meters water tanker
in Barangay Estancia, Kalibo, Aklan to ensure continued supply of water 24/7 in
service areas.
So
far, the consumers of water district are also experiencing low water pressure
usually during peak demand hours.
With
or without El Niño, the public and consumers are encouraged to report leaks,
excessive water billings and illegal connections in the communities.
Meanwhile,
MKWD has an extensive reforestation project in partnership with the Department
of Natural Resources and Natural Resources in the hinterland village of Galicia
in Madalag, Aklan involving 150 hectares of forestland within the Protected
Area of the Aklan River Watershed Forest Reserve.
The
project is the completion of 2005 watershed reserve reforestation of
MKWD.
