In the athletics competition of the 2014
Palarong Pambansa at the Laguna Sports Complex, Angelica De Josef from Aklan province stamped her
class in her favorite secondary girls’ 800-meter event by topping 2:17.7 ahead of
Trishia Ramirez of Calabarzon, who clocked 2:18.3.
Jie
Anne Calis of Northern Mindanao settled for bronze in 2:18.6.
While
De Josef of Lezo Integrated School in Lezo, Aklan did not better her existing Palarong Pambansa record, the barefoot runner
duplicated her feat and successfully defended her Palaro title by winning the
gold medal.
Last
year, De Josef smashed the 1995 record of Dely Condes of National Capital
Region, running 2:17.20 to win the gold in 800-meter run in Dumaguete City.
The
15-year old De Josef’s career was unusual in that she trained and raced
barefoot in the annual Palarong Pambansa and other international athletic events.
De
Josef also continued her unbeaten streak in 800-meter run. Two years ago, she also
won the 800-meter title in the elementary division in record fashion in
Lingayen, Pangasinan.
She
clocked 2:18.8 to break the 2011 Palarong Pambansa record of 2:21.48 of Joneza
Mie Sustuedo of Western Visayas.
