Jerremay Rubias of Aklan bagged the bronze medal
in secondary girls’ javelin throw in the first day of athletics events of the
2014 Palarong Pambansa in Sta. Cruz, Laguna on Sunday afternoon.
The 16-year old defending champion from Tangalan
National High School in Tangalan, Aklan heaved 38.06 meters for the bronze.
Zeanne Faith Cabrera from Laguna ruled the javelin throw
event held at Laguna Sports Complex in 40.31 meters for the first gold medal of
Calabarzon, beating Monica Louise Andaya of National Capital Region, who took
the silver in 39.66 meters.
Cabrera, who placed sixth in last year’s
Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City, also improved her personal best of 38.87
meters she registered in Lucena City regional event.
The existing Palaro record for javelin throw
was recorded by Stephanie Cimatu of Ilocos Region with a throw of 41.27 meters
in Dapitan City three years ago.
In secondary boys long jump, Western Visayas
bet Jose Gerry Belibestre, Jr. took the gold with a leapt to a distance of 7.08
meters.
The 15-year old student of Romanito Maravilla
National High School in Bacolod City bested five other finalists for the first
gold of Western Visayas in athletics.
Martin James Esteban of Central Luzon got the
silver in 6.70 meters and Erson Jay Osoteo,
also from Central Luzon, won the bronze in 6.55 meters.
Athletics events resume on Monday afternoon
for elementary triple jump, elementary girls shot put and secondary boys triple
jump finals.
