Aklan electric coop manager opts for early retirement

BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

A top official of Aklan Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Akelco) has announced his plans to retire effective June 30 this year.

Akelco general manager Chito Peralta ended months of speculations of his ‘early retirement’ plans from the electric cooperative after he informed the board of directors in their meeting on Monday at Akelco’s main office in Lezo, Aklan.

Peralta is an ex-officio member of Akelco’s board of directors.

Over Barangay 92.9 Super Radyo Kalibo, the embattled Peralta said he quit his post in Akelco for personal reason – to spend more time with his family.

“I always wanted to use my remaining productive years with my family and friends. I will live a private life. I want to keep my privacy,” he said in an interview by Kaibahang Butz Maquinto.

The emotional yet happy Peralta also thanked the employees of Akelco for their mutual support and dedicated service.
To his critics, he advised them to “learn their ABCs that his early retirement is not a gracious exit for him.”

Peralta said, “his early retirement is not a compromised deal with the National Electrification Administration where he has a pending case filed by electric consumers."

The 58-year old Peralta, who served as Akelco manager for six years and 10 months now, had seen the electric cooperative grew through the years, being financially stable and resilient in the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda and Frank.

The sole power distributor services 17 municipalities in Aklan and two municipalities in Antique. It is categorized as Class A+ (Mega-Large) by the National Electrification Administration (NEA).

A source from Akelco said Akelco board president Wayne Malilay will take charge of the electric cooperative operations by July 1 until NEA will appoint a permanent general manager.
