Legit NGOs must act

Echoes From
BY JOHNNY DAYANG

Despite the scandals created by Janet Lim-Napoles’ alleged fake foundations, the legitimate non-government organizations (NGOs) should now actively reassume their responsibilities and reassert their inherent functions to serve their country and people, especially the disadvantaged citizens in the countryside.

The NGOs should even be in the forefront in charting and directing programs of the country and address the nation’s problems and challenges.

In the light of the badly-damage and corrupt political culture, the citizenry through the NGOs must reassume the direction of the nation’s affairs.

The more knowledgeable, respected, and civic-minded citizens who are not in the government service should lend theircollective talents, experience and expertise to chart the progress and development of the Philippines and spearhead-movements for reforms and meaningful changes.

The best and the brightest among our people are in the private sectors, not in the government. It is the disgusting abuse of political power and influence that has stymied economic growth and development and stalled the operations of government instrumentalities.

The corruptive allure of high position in government is what discourage sincere and honest leaders in business and professional circles to enter and seek positions in government.
The emergence of non-government organizations or NGOs is reaction, and oblique distaste for government service.

But the NGOs must be cause-oriented values-driven, and collective in leadership. Members of the NGOs must be individuals of proven track records, highly respected in professional disciplines and occupations, competent, honest and dedicated.

If the various NGOs converge and together as an advocacy and mission-propelled movement, they can recast and reinvent vital sectors of Philippine Society to set up a truly democratic and egalitarian polity.
