An assistant manager of the Rural Bank of Ibajay was found dead amid burning debris as fire gutted the bank early morning yesterday.

Sixty-eight-year-old Gabriel Manikan, a resident of Brgy. Capilihan, Ibajay, some 34 kilometers west of this capital town, had gunshot wounds in the chest.

Manikan was already partially burned when firefighters discovered him.

The fire started at about 6 a.m., SPO3 Cezar Igtanloc, deputy municipal police chief, said, citing a report from a concerned citizen.

Firefighters from Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) units in Ibajay and Kalibo, and Pandan, Antique, rushed to the scene.

While searching the bank, they found the assistant manager sitting bloodied and lifeless.

Nearby residents brought Manikan to Ibajay District Hospital, but the victim was pronounced dead on arrival, Igtanloc said.

Except for its automated teller machine, the entire rural bank had been destroyed by the blaze, Senior Fire Officer 2 Ricardo Igtanloc Jr. of BFP-Ibajay said.

The adjacent building of Aklan Cable Television Network had also been damaged, said SFO2 Igtanloc.

The fire had been totally put out at 8:40 a.m. Fire officers were yet to determine its cause and the cost of damage.

Scene of crime operatives in Aklan were also investigating the motive behind the killing of Manikan as of this writing.

Police have found an empty shell and a spent bullet of a still undetermined firearm caliber inside the bank.

SFO2 Igtanloc said the victim reports to work early every day to inspect the bank. It was known that the bank’s security guard was on duty only in the evening.

Police investigation also showed that nearby residents heard two gunshots before seeing smoke billowing from the bank.

While it was not yet clear if anything was taken from the bank, investigators were eyeing robbery as possible motive. (With reports from Hublas nga Kamatuoran and Bombo Radyo)
