In an interview by a Boracay radio station, Boracay
Tourist Assistance Center (BTAC) chief of police Senior Inspector Mark Evan
Salvo reminded the public “to be wary and alert against individuals suspected
of committing petty crimes, which are usually rampant during peak season.”
A number of incidents and petty crimes, especially
against foreigners, have occurred in Boracay Island. Some of them were either
victims of pick pocketing, mauling, snatching and theft of laptops, mobile
phones and belongings.
Salvo said BTAC will increase its visibility in public
places and the communities amid reports of petty crimes in Boracay Island.
The new Boracay police chief also vowed to intensify the campaigns against illegal drugs and illegal gambling. To sustain its operations, BTAC
still needs the support of the community, non-governmental organizations and other
sectors to ensure the success of their campaigns.
Meanwhile, PO3 Christopher Mendoza, BTAC police community
relations officer, stressed “tourist police marshalls” are also deployed to
secure travelers staying in Boracay Island.
Last year, the months of March to May are the peak
tourism season in Boracay with 441,881 tourists.
Tourism officer Artemio Ticar also reminded travelers to
take care of their personal belongings at all times and to avoid bringing
expensive cameras, watches and jewelries in public that may be tempting targets
for thieves.
“If you are the victim of petty crime, you should report
it and seek the immediate assistance of police authorities,” he said.
