445-strong Aklan athletes gird for WVRAA meet

The province of Aklan is sending 445 athletes for the 2014 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet in San Jose de Buenavista, Antique from February 9 to 13. 

The regional sporting event gets underway at Evelio B. Javier Memorial Sports Complex with some 2,000 student athletes, sports officials and coaches from five out of six provinces in Western Visayas.

Capiz province is not participating in the weeklong WVRAA Meet due to super typhoon Yolanda devastation. 

The theme for this year’s athletic meet is “Playing Together, Building Together, Rising Together.”

On Sunday, the grand parade of technical officials and all delegations will start at 3 p.m. from Evelio B. Javier Freedom Park to Evelio B. Javier Memorial Sports Complex followed by the opening program. 

The athletes will be competing in sporting events of archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, chess, boxing, football, gymnastics, sepak takraw (sipa), softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball and special events. 

Aklan delegates will be billeted in Assemblyman Segundo Moscoso Memorial School in San Pedro, San Jose, Antique. Negros Occidental delegates will stay in Sibalom Central School and Sibalom National High School.

Antique National School for Guimaras and Iloilo and Atabay Elementary School for host province Antique.
