P2.5-billion tourism receipts for January and February,
tourism remains key to Aklan's development - Marquez

KALIBO, Aklan – Tourism remains a key engine of development of the province of Aklan.
Aklan Governor Carlito Marquez said the popular island of Boracay generated P2.5-billion tourism receipts for the first two months this year.
Over DyRU Super Radyo Kalibo, the governor also cited the positive growth of local tourism owing to the 16.38 percent increase on tourist arrivals for the month of February.
Marquez said domestic and international travellers registered 69,745 compared to 59,928 of the same period last year in Boracay Island. The jetty port collections in Caticlan and Cagban also increased from P8.692-million in February last year to P9.6-million collections last month, posting an increase of 10.22 percent.
“Overall, the jetty port collections from January to February this year totalled P20-million compared to P17-million of previous year or an increase of 17.47 percent,” said Marquez in his Governor’s Report to the People.
Marquez said the provincial government is improving its support facilities to accommodate the one-million tourists by 2012.
“I am optimistic we could achieve one million tourists target since the infrastructure support facilities will be finished soon such as the improvement of Caticlan airport and the ongoing construction of Alphaland for the polo club in Nabas, Aklan,” he said.
“I am certain that the accessibility and interest of tourists could be attained this year with regional flights from neighboring countries."
At least 15 international flights leave Taiwan, South Korea and China to the capital town of Aklan which include
Philippine Airlines and Spirit of Manila Airlines for their Taipei to Kalibo International Airport route. Both have four flights weekly.
China Airlines and Mandarin Airlines also have two flights weekly and Zest Air from Incheon, South Korea has four flights weekly, Pusan to Kalibo has two weekly flights and Shanghai, China has five flights weekly.
