KALIBO, Aklan - Thirty tribes will officially compete in this year's Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati-Atihan Festival, the festival organizer said.
Albert Menez, chair of Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi), a private organization that runs the 2011 Ati-Atihan festival, said the foundation has chosen the competing tribes in the Balik-Ati, Tribal Big and Small, Modern Group and Individual categories.

In this year's Ati-Atihan festival, Tribu Isalacan (Lilo-an, Malinao), Malipayong Ati (San Roque, Malinao), Apo ni Inday (Calangcang, Makato), Kinantuing (San Roque, Malinao), Maninikop (Caano, Kalibo), Lilo anong Ati ag Datu Marikudo (Lilo-an, Malinao) and Tribu Ilayanhon (Malandayon, Malinao) are competing in the Balik-Ati category.
Five modern groups - Adlaw Gabii ni John (Poblacion, Tangalan), Kababaihan it Kalibo (New Buswang, Kalibo), Scorpio 11-19 (Poblacion, Kalibo), Enchanting (Poblacion, Kalibo) and Aeang-Aeang (Laguinbanua West, Numancia) - are also selected to join the Ati competition.
Kabog (Estancia, Kalibo) will also defend its title in the Tribal Big category against seven other contesting tribes, namely, Lord Eagles (Dumga, Makato), Tribu Tiis-Tiis (New Buswang, Kalibo), Maharlika Tribe (Dumga, Makato), Black Beauty Boys (Linabuan Norte, Kalibo), Libtong Boys (Estancia, Kalibo), D' Kamanggahan Tribe (Poblacion, Makato) and Pangawasan Tribe (Cayangwan, Makato).
Tribu Hampakan "King of Spider" (Estancia, Kalibo) joins nine other tribes - Tribu Tipon-Tipon (Ibao, Lezo), Tribu Parola (Daja Norte, Banga), Lezo Tribe (Ibao, Lezo), Tribu Osman-ians Copradiros (Osman, Malinao), Morongga Tribe (New Buswang, Kalibo), Tribu Ninolitos (Tigayon, Kalibo), Tribu Bukid Tigayon (Tigayon, Kalibo), Tribu Responde (New Buswang, Kalibo) and Tribu Alibang-bang (Linabuan Norte, Kalibo) in the Tribal Small category.
Nine judges were selected by Kasafi to judge on January 14 for the Modern group and on January 15 for Tribal – Big and Small, Balik-Ati and Individual categories. The winners for the Ati-Atihan contest will be announced on January 16 at the Kalibo Magsaysay Park.
Earlier, the foundation gave financial subsidy to the competing tribes to defray their festival expenses, according to Kasafi chair on committee on group participation Dennis Dalida.
Meanwhile, 17 entries in the individual category are also included in the Ati competition. These are Fantastica, Absurungsong, Jungle Tribe, Cannibal, Butterfly Queen, Pios Shell, Showgays Sister, The Golden Sarok, Recycled Queen, Authentic Customized Ati, Bihag, Dyusa, Bagia, The Judgement, Fantastik, Silver and Violet and Banig-Banig.
