KALIBO, Aklan - Aklanons abroad will stage their Ati-Atihan festival in honor of Senor Sto. Nino on January 8, 2011.
The Aklan Association of Sacramento and Vicinity, Inc. (AASVI) holds its 20th Annual Ati-Atihan Festival and Dance at Jose Rizal Community Center in Sacramento, California. The event showcases the colorful and grandest celebration of thousands of devotees in the Filipino communities in the capital city of California.
Held every second Saturday of January or before the festival in Kalibo, Aklan, the Ati-Atihan festival in California has a rich history of culture and religious devotion to the Sto. Nino. It highlights the traditional procession of Sto. Ninos images and statues, holy mass, Pahilot or Paepak and the parade of tribos in their Ati-Atihan costumes.
The festival in California dates back in early 90s to bring together the Filipino American families in a celebration honoring the Holy Infant Jesus. Outside Sacramento, California, many Filipinos living in urban areas of Canada and San Francisco also commemorate the feast of Sto. Nino every January.
