KALIBO, Aklan - Seven civilians were arrested throughout the province by the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO) for violating the nationwide gun ban of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Aklan police director Senior Superintendent Epifanio Bragais, Jr. said the local police confiscated five firearms and two bladed weapons during the gun ban period which started last September 25 until midnight of November 10.
To ensure a peaceful and orderly synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, the Comelec deputized the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct regular checkpoints and inspections across the country.
No major election related violent incidents were reported in Aklan since the enforcement of the 45-day election period by Comelec. No soldiers, government employees and police personnel were also included as violators of gun ban.
Bragais and Comelec Aklan described the recent barangay elections last October 25 as 'generally peaceful. The poll body held special elections on October 27 in three hinterland villages of the town of Libacao following the delayed delivery of election paraphernalia on the scheduled polls.
With the lifting of gun ban, gun holders with permits from the Philippine National Police can carry now their firearms outside their residence.
However, the Comelec and PNP will continue to implement the gun ban until November 28 in the provinces of Basilan and Lanao del Sur with the holding of special elections on November 13.
A total of 940 gun ban violators were apprehended by the local police during the 45-day gun ban period in the country, the PNP reported.
