KALIBO, Aklan – Gun ban violators were apprehended as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO) intensified their total gun ban campaign for the October 25 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.
Aklan police director Senior Superintendent Epifanio Bragais, Jr. said three civilians were arrested for carrying firearms since the implementation of the 45-day period gun ban by the poll body in the 327 barangays in Aklan.
“Two suspects from Numancia and a woman suspect from Buruanga, who aimed a homemade shotgun, were collared by the law enforcers when they responded to a call. They (suspects) were detained and facing charges for violations of gun ban,” he said.
No violators were caught at the regular Comelec checkpoints set up throughout the province as part of the gun ban implementation, Bragais added.
To minimize election-related violence, the total gun ban from September 25 until November 15 was imposed banning all persons from carrying firearms and deadly weapons in public places including streets, public buildings, parks and private vehicles.
Only regular members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and other law enforcement agencies of the government are authorized to carry and possess firearms during the election period, provided they are in their full uniform and are in the actual performance of their election duties.
Meanwhile, the filing of certificate of candidacy will end on October 13 midnight at the local Comelec office.
Under Comelec Resolution No. 9028, candidates for the barangay captain and kagawad positions must be Filipino citizens and at least 18 years of age on October 25 while SK candidates must be at least 15 years old but less than 18 years old on election day.
They must be able to read and write Filipino or any local dialect, a registered voter and resident of the barangay where they intend to run for office for at least one year prior to election day.
