KALIBO, Aklan – The subsidy and financial assistance for the 2011 Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati-Atihan Festival will be given next month for each participating tribe.
This was the assurance of Kalibo mayor William Lachica before the members of Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi) during the regular session of the Kalibo Sangguniang Bayan on Thursday afternoon.
And here’s another reason for tribal groups to be happy.
Kasafi chairman Albert Meñez said competing tribes are given additional incentives provided they participated for five consecutive years in the Kalibo Ati-Atihan festival. The incentives, he added, will be taken from the P500,000 funds of the disbanded Kalibo Ati-Atihan Management Board (KAMB) aside from the regular subsidies of the local government of Kalibo.
Kasafi, a private sector-led foundation tasked to manage and promote the Kalibo festival in honor of Senor Sto. Nino, earlier urged Mayor Lachica to initially disburse the incentives for the participating tribes to augment the cost of uniforms and allowances.
Last year, the local government of Kalibo distributed P470,000 subsidy for the participating tribes and cash prizes of P364,000 for the winners of the 2010 Ati-Atihan festival.
With the 20 percent increase in Ati-Atihan subsidy, big group tribal will receive P30,000, small group tribal will also receive P18,000, modern group and Balik-Ati will be given P10,000 each.
A total budget of P1.1-million for contesting tribes subsidy and cash prizes are allocated for the 2011 Kalibo Ati-Atihan festival from January 10 to 16, 2011. Sixteen tribes, so far, registered with Kasafi for next year's festival.

Meñez said the Kasafi has tapped the services of tourism students for the day-tour and has coordinated with travel tour agencies for the Ati-Atihan flea market tour to attract Boracay-bound tourists to grace the world famous Ati-Atihan festival.
"Expect a colorful and grandest festival as the town of Kalibo and devotees celebrate the Ati-Atihan in honor of Señor Sto. Niño," he said.
