KALIBO, Aklan - Three councilors are vying for the presidency of the Philippine Councilor's League (PCL)-Aklan Chapter on August 18.
The prize : ex-officio seat in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Aklan and the right to lead the 136-strong Aklan councilors for the next three years.
Two-termer Kalibo councilor Emmanuel Soviet Russia Dela Cruz, three-termer Banga councilor Jonna Torres and neophyte Libacao legislator Vincent Navarosa confirmed that they will run for president of PCL-Aklan.
Interim provincial federation president Basilides Tabernilla of Makato, Aklan has yet to confirm his bid for the presidency, although, he has been attending the regular and special sessions of Aklan SP since July 14.
Torres and Navarosa ran and won under Lakas Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) while Dela Cruz aligned with Tibyog Akean in the May 10, 2010 elections.
Torres is aiming to become the first woman councilor to clinch the presidency of PCL in Aklan while 31-year old Navarosa, son of incumbent Libacao mayor Charito Navarosa, could be the youngest president in the history of PCL Aklan if elected in the PCL polls on August 18.
The trio started their campaign last month by urging fellow councilors to rally behind their presidency for the scheduled polls supervised by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Aklan.
PCL, first conceived in 1989, obtained its official status as a local government association when it was accredited by the then Department of Local Government on September 3, 1990, and subsequently registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on September 17, 1990.
As a local government association with a large constituency, the PCL continues to evolve as a dynamic and vibrant organization of local legislators that is always at the forefront of contemporary and emerging trends in the local administration and development.
