KALIBO, Aklan - Mira Mirano of Aklan bagged the bronze medal in the girls 14 years old and under of the rapid competition of the 11th ASEAN age-group chess championships in Subic Freeport, Olongapo City on June 4 to 12.
The 13-year old high student of Saint Gabriel College scored 4.5 points on three wins and three draws in the seven-round elimination of the chess event organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) in cooperation with the ASEAN Chess Confederation.
Mirano outclassed Pham Hong Minh of Vietnam, Rujok Najwa Jiahui of Singapore, Rowelyn Joy Acedo of host country and halved the point with Dao Thi Lan Anh and Do Hoang Minh Tao of Vietnam and compatriot Ynna Sophia Canape.
The lone girl Aklanon player finished third to Do Hoang Minh Tho, who scored 5.5 points, and Pham Hong Minh with five points.
Aside from the bronze medal, Mirano also settled for silver in the blitz team category. She won over compatriots Michelle Yaon and Marianne Jasmine Infesto, Pham Hong Minh of Vietnam and Rujok Najwa Jiahui of Singapore. Mirano drew with Rowelyn Joy Acedo and Yuna Sophia Canape of the Philippines to earn five points in the girls 14 under bracket.
Mirano also placed fourth in the standard chess with 5.5 points, defeating four compatriots - Michelle Yaon, Dhona Yngayo, Mariane Jasmine Infiesto and Shayxanthe Lois Guico and halved the point with Vietnamese playerrs Dao Thi Lan Anh and Pham Hong Minh and Filipino player Rowelyn Joy Acedo.
Meanwhile, John Michael Oczon of Kalibo Pilot Elementary School captured the silver medal in the blitz team category 10 years old and under in the nine-round elimination.
Oczon, a member of team Aklan 'D' in the 2010 Inter-Provincial Chess Team Championship held here last April, outsteadied Tin Jingyao of Singapore, Amier Hamzah B Mohd Zuhri of Malaysia and four Filipino players - Vincent Salcedo, Japheth Jeuel Guico, James Andrew Balbona and Mark James Marcellana.
