Secrets and hideaways of Boracay
BY ALBERT ALVAREZ

The last time I set foot on the shores of Boracay, there were not many resorts and commercial establishments were limited.
To my amazement, the Boracay of today has become a progressive web of hotels and commercial establishments.
Commerce has truly taken over the island. But of course, Boracay has always been, and maybe, will continue to be, a top destination for the country, for different seasons of the year such as Holy Week, summer break and the harsh winters of those from far away.
Now that summer is upon us, it will be no surprise that Boracay shall be filled with those who wish to experience the allure of what many have seen, heard and felt. It is famous for the long stretch of white sand beach, crystal clear waters and the party atmosphere pulsating all day or all night. But could it be also a place to for those who would want to contemplate, meditate and be one with nature, especially during the days of Holy week?
Well, dotted all over the island are some secrets and hideaways tucked away from the busy crowds and bustling activity, where it is possible to relax and have the break to heal yourself from the stresses of life.
A prime example of such a place, would be the lush and green Mandala Spa, (
www.mandalaspa.com). It almost feels like you are in another place when you set foot here because of the trees, plants and eco-friendly structures within the secluded property. It truly is a sanctuary for the body and spirit.
Other hidden hideaways would be the beaches of Puca and Bulabog, each having their own unique features, that make them worthwhile havens of peace and tranquility.
If you prefer mountain views, then try making a trip to Mt. Luho. From the Mt. Luho view point, the vistas are breathtaking and the sense of calm fills you, as you take in all that you see around you. Of course, the nourishment of the soul is just as important as the nourishment of the body.
I strongly suggest dropping by Real Coffee to sample the amazing flavor of their Calamansi muffins. Another Boracay staple would be Jonah’s fruit shakes, which for me, has the best banana shake, that could seemingly make my troubles go away.
For those who wish to seek a more quiet side of Boracay, there are several hotels and resorts that provide such comforts.
These range from the very high end to the economical.
The Gran Prix chain of hotels may have what you seek so check them out at
www.granprixhotels.com/Boracay and www.thesitioboracay.com/index.html.
I always advise anyone going on a trip, to always take note of some important facts that you need to know about your destination, like telephone numbers and hotlines of the police, hospitals, banks, credit card companies, ports, airport, bus stations and the tourist office. Being prepared makes you feel a whole lot better about your entire trip.
The Boracay experience was certainly not what I had thought it would be. If I had expectations of excessive partying and non-stop action, I was awakened to a different reality, that the island of Boracay has a lot more secrets and hideaways for the weary spirit. So, whatever you wish your next holiday trip to Boracay to be, I think you may get what you wish for in this amazing paradise getaway.
