KALIBO, Aklan – Nine cases were recorded by the Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO) following the arrest by the Kalibo Philippine National Police (PNP) of a civilian for gun ban violation on Thursday evening. Kalibo police chief Senior Insp. Arnolito Laguerta identified the latest gun ban violator as Rosano Timban, 33, a resident of Dumatad, Tangalan, Aklan. He was apprehended in Sto. Village, Barangay Poblacion, this town, at about 9:40 p.m.
Initial police investigation showed Timban allegedly shot Zandrix Torres, 35, of Barangay Andagao while they were drinking in a birthday party at Margie Ticar’s house. Torres, however, managed to escape unhurt
Timban, in his complaint, said that Torres slapped his face and struck him with a bottle. Timban also alleged Torres of destroying his motorcycle parked outside the house of Ticar.
Shortly after the shooting, responding cops recovered a caliber 45 pistol from Timban with four live ammunitions and an empty shell. Later, the suspect was brought to a local hospital for treatment of his minor injuries. He is temporarily detained at Kalibo PNP lock-up cell while waiting for the proper charges to be filed against him.
Aklan police provincial director Senior Supt. Epifanio Bragais, Jr. said the latest arrest of Timban brought to nine the number of gun ban violators, including two uniformed personnel apprehended for violating the total gun ban implemented by the Commission of Elections (Comelec) and PNP nationwide.
“There were charges filed against them, however, the case against a jail officer was dismissed. So far, the APPO recorded nine cases of total gun ban violations in the province,” he said.
Most gun ban violators were collared by APPO in checkpoints across the province after Comelec issued Resolution No. 8714.
The poll body prohibits the carrying of firearms and deadly weapons, except for personnel of the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines and the National Bureau of Investigation while on duty and in proper uniform, during the election period from January 10 to June 30, 2010.
In Western Visayas, the Police Regional Office (PRO)-6 recorded 154 gun ban violators, mostly civilians, of which 52 cases were reported in Negros Occidental followed by Bacolod City with 29 and Capiz with 18.
