2010 Aklan Gov. Carlito S. Marquez Basketball Cup
New Washington upsets Banga, 81-66

KALIBO, Aklan – New Washington trashed defending champion Banga 81-66 to lead the 2010 Aklan Governor Carlito S. Marquez Inter-Town Basketball Cup at Gov. Augusto B. Legaspi Memorial and Sports Center on Sunday morning.
John Maatubang scored 27 points for New Washington and got a huge lift from Jonathan Francisco with 20 points, Dela Cruz with 12 points and Aldwin Ferrer had 11 points.
Maatubang had all the points in the 10-0 run in the last 2:40 of the third quarter for a 60-50 cushion. In the final canto, New Washington used a small 8-0 run to build its largest lead of the game 68-50. Banga didn’t score its first basket in the final quarter until 4:51 mark by an easy put back of Ricky Reloj.
Tournament reigning MVP Ricky Ricafuente, who made five of his 16 attempts in the three-point area, scored 22 points for Banga. Ricafuente, who also played for Thailand Tigers in the Asean Basketball League (ABL), was held scoreless in the final quarter and also missed his final six shots beyond the arc.
In the first half, with 3.1 seconds left, Maatubang hit a shot from beyond half court to give New Washington a 38-34 margin. At the start of the third canto, Ricafuente scored back-to-back three pointers to tie the game at 50-50 before Maatubang began to get hot in the offensive end with 10 straight points, including two three-point shots through the third period.
Banga held a 20-17 lead in the game’s opening quarter, but failed to match the solid defense and firepower of New Washington in the second half.
Nabor had 11 points, Joy Alacar contributed 10 points and Brian Quimpo scored 7 points for Banga.
The summer basketball tournament kicked off with a parade of participating teams from 17 municipalities. The opening ceremony was also graced by Sangguniang Panlalawigan members Nemesio Neron, Daisy Briones, Rodson Mayor and Jean Rodriquez and Kalibo Sangguniang Bayan member Lillian Tirol.
Tangalan mayor Gene Fuentes represented Governor Marquez for the formal declaration of the opening of games.
