KALIBO, Aklan – Six boxers from host province of Aklan in the elementary and secondary divisions barged into the championship round of the 2010 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet at the Kalibo Magsaysay Park yesterday afternoon.
Macky Delfin of Ibajay Academy in Ibajay, Aklan won by points against Rafael Sueno from Ramon Torres National High School of Bago, Negros Occidental in the 45 kgs category.
Delfin, a three-time Palarong Pambansa athlete, started with solid combinations to the head and body that dropped the Negros boxer in the closing seconds of the first round. Sueno, however, came out strong in the second round until the 2009 Palarong Pambansa gold medalist from Aklan mounted a comeback in the final round.
Noriel Pellio of Solido National High School of Nabas, Aklan also survived the furious attack of Jomar Fajardo of Santillan National High School in the last two rounds to outpoint the Negros opponent in the 48 kg class.
Pellio, the 2009 Palarong Pambansa silver medalist, will slug it out in the light flyweight on Tuesday afternoon with Robin Dingcong, also from Ramon Torres National High School of Bago, Negros Occidental, who defeated Nicanor Dungalan of Ramon Benjamin Sr. National High School of Dumarao, Capiz by a referee stop contest (RSC) in the first round.
In the 42 kgs category, Haichel Baliguat of Naisud National High School in Ibajay, Aklan won over Julius Bendoy of Marcos Fuentes Integrated School in Dinginan, Roxas City, Capiz.

Jeffrey Bagacay of Ramon Torres National High School in Bago, Negros Occidental also clobbered Ruden Ignacio of Granada National High School (Ballesteros campus) in Carles, Iloilo to earn a shot for the gold medal against Baliguat.
In the 39 kgs, Aklan’s bet Raymund Salmingo of Union National High School in Nabas, Aklan outclassed Arnel Mandal of Melchor Nava National High School in Iloilo.
Viel Ryan Cahilig of Lezo Integrated School in Lezo, Aklan dominated Franz Santillan of Pandan Vocational High School in Pandan, Antique in the 36 kgs category while El Jean Hermedalla of Negros Occidental outsmarted Joseph Adaniel of Granada National High School (Ballesteros campus) in Carles, Iloilo in the other 36 kg match.

Fritz John Estrella of Calaparan Elementary School in Iloilo outscored Michael Hidalgo of Marcos Fuentes Elementary School in Capiz in the 32 kgs while Aklanon boxer Mark Anthony Maslog of Naisud Elementary School suffered defeat in the hands of Relly Noel Esparagosa of Pacita Elementary School of Castellana, Negros Occidental.
Estrella and Esparagosa will fight the gold in the 32 kgs category for the right to represent the Western Visayas in the 2010 Palarong Pambansa in Tarlac next month.
In all, Aklan sent six pugilists out of seven in the finals. All losers are guaranteed of the bronze medals while the winners advance to the gold medal bouts that will start at 3 p.m. at Kalibo Magsaysay Park on March 16.
