Aklan, Negros took home overall boxing titles

KALIBO, Aklan – Aklan boxing team grabbed three gold medals to cop the overall championship title in the secondary division at the 2010 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet at Kalibo Magsaysay Park yesterday afternoon.
Leading the charge was Macky Delfin of Ibajay Academy, who stopped Emmel del Mar of Manuel F. Onato Memorial High School of Dumarao, Capiz, in a lopsided bout via a referee stopped contest (RSC) with 45 seconds left in the second round.
Delfin will defend his 45 kilogram pinweight title in the Tarlac Palarong Pambansa on April 11 to 17 along with teammate Noriel Pellio of Solido National High School in Nabas, Aklan.
Light flyweight boxer Pellio turned back the attack of Robin Dingcong of Negros Occidental in their gold medal match at the 48 kg class. Pellio scored on powerful counter-punches to frustrate his rival's attempts at landing punches in the last two rounds.
El Jean Hermedalla of Negros Occidental was equally dominating in his triumph against Viel Niel Cahilig of Aklan for the gold in the mosquito 36 kgs finals. The bronzes went to Joseph Adaniel of Iloilo and Franz Santillan of Antique.
In the vacuumweight 39 kgs category, Raymund Salmingo of Union National High School in Nabas, Aklan set the tone for the seven-man Aklan boxing team in the finals by pulling off a surprise with a victory against Jude Joseco of Antique. Arnel Mandal of Iloilo salvaged the silver medal.
Jeffrey Bagacay of Negros bagged the paperweight 42 kgs gold at the expense of Michael Baliguat of Aklan. Ruden Ignacio of Iloilo and Julius Bendoy of Capiz, both settled for the bronze.
Meanwhile, Negros exerted its supremacy in the elementary division with two golds with the golden efforts of Renz Orcada against Jasper Montesa of Aklan while Sunny Boy Devarras of Iloilo took the bronze in the 30 kgs.
In the 32 kgs match, Jellynel Esparagosa of Negros beat Fritz John Estrella of Iloilo for the gold. Mark Anthony Maslog of Aklan went home with the bronze.
In the overall race, Aklan amassed a total of 27 points with three golds and two silvers to bag the over-all title in the secondary division followed by Negros (18 points) with two golds, one silver and one bronze, Capiz for third place (5 points) with one silver and two bronzes while Iloilo and Antique tied for 4th place.
In the elementary division, Negros rule the weeklong boxing event with 14 points with two golds, Aklan and Iloilo tied for third place (4 points) with one silver and one bronze each followed by Capiz (1 point) with one bronze.
