PAPI braces for December Press Congress
BY JOHNNY NUNEZ

MANILA – Five months before December, but the national directorate of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc (PAPI) is already on its toes bracing up for the yearly National Press Congress to be participated in by media practitioners, including campus journalists and government information officers nationwide.
This year’s National Press Congress, the 12the since the reinvigoration of the organization under the leadership of veteran journalist, Juan P. Dayang, will focus more on the country’s achievers, particularly their contributions to national development, according to PAPI auditor Feliciano Caracas of Pangasinan News.
“The national directorate has decided to give more emphasis on individual achievers whose ventures contribute greatly to national development,” Caracas said, as he pointed out that the “Man of the Year Award” will highlight the 12th National Press Congress.
As in past congresses, the three-day December event, considered the biggest annual gathering of the country’s media practitioners, will also tackle the pressing problems that continue to hound the industry, especially the operation of small weekly newspapers which rely much on the publication of judicial notices.
Dayang said the PAPI membership committee is now validating the credentials of publications in an effort to upgrade the quality of membership.
The National Press Congress has been made a permanent fixture in the media industry by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her Proclamation No. 1187 issued December 7, 2006.
