Uncle Tony backs Apol, junks nephew Raymar
BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

KALIBO, Aklan – Blood is no longer thicker than water.
Take the case of congressional candidate Anthony Yu-Acevedo (PMP-PDP-Laban) who openly declared his willingness to support mayoral bet Apolonio “Apol” Zaraspe III instead of reelectionist mayor and nephew Raymar Acevedo-Rebaldo.
The incumbent mayor, who is seeking his last term, is the son of Provincial Assessor Mary Jean Acevedo-Rebaldo.
Acevedo said he is supporting Zaraspe since the latter’s platform of government provides for better and concrete solutions to pressing issues of the province and the capital town.
“Rebaldo is seeking his candidacy in other parties. Apol is our candidate in the opposition and I am more comfortable with him,” stressed Acevedo over DyRG Budyong ng Kalibo yesterday.
The endorsement of Acevedo for Zaraspe mostly likely severed his ties with his nephew, who is running under the ruling local coalition Tibyog Akean.
Lawyer Acevedo, a newcomer in local politics, is challenging reelectionist Aklan Cong. Florencio Miraflores (Kampi-Tibyog Akean) for the lone district of Aklan.
He vowed to initiate reforms for the indigents of Aklan and provide an alternative tourism plans for the famous tourist destination of Boracay Island.
Opposition bet and former mayor William Lachica (Nacionalista Party), who lost in 2004 elections by a slim margin of 81 votes, is also challenging Rebaldo for the mayoral post.
Acevedo also pointed out he enjoyed the support of the renowned Tres Marias – gubernatorial bets Vicky Ramos, Maria Bettina Mobo-Garcia and Karen Grace Galvan – in his election bid.
