NEW WASHINGTON, Aklan – Too late than never.
The local candidates here set aside their political differences and joined hands to support the symbolic peace covenant signing at the town's Commission on Elections (Comelec) office on Tuesday morning.
This marked the first time - lawyer Edgar Peralta (Lakas-CMD), former mayor Eriberto Venus (Nacionalista Party), three-termer councilor Apollo Peralta (PDP-Laban) and businessman Willex MeƱez (Independent) - reaffirmed their pledge for a peaceful, honest and orderly elections.
Businessman Bertoldo Ambito (Partido ng Masang Pilipino), who is also seeking the mayoralty post, failed to attend the signing of peace covenant.
The event was supported by the Comelec, the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP), the Aklan United Media Association and the Aklan Police and Defense Press Corps.
Also present were reelectionist Jean Velarde (Kampi) and businesswoman Marie Juliet Cecile Peralta (NP), who are both pitted for the vice mayoralty seat. All 22 Sangguniang Bayan candidates also signified their support for the peace covenant.
KBP Aklan chapter chairman Augusto Tolentino and acting Aklan police director Senior Supt. Benigno Durana Jr said, "they are confident the elections in this town will be peaceful and orderly despite the disqualification case against Venus."
“The candidates are willing to cooperate and adhere to the peace covenant and to shun election-related violence in barangays,” Tolentino added.
Mayoral hopeful Edgar Peralta earlier sought for the disqualification of incumbent Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Venus for violation of Batas Pambansa Bilang 52 or the Special Disqualification of Elective Local Officials.
