No ‘clean sweep’ for Tibyog Akean, UNO
BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

KALIBO, Aklan - With barely 10 days to go, the formidable Kampi-Lakas CMD and the United Opposition (UNO) in the province are both facing “rough sailing” in the crucial May 14 polls.
Reelectionist Florencio Miraflores (Kampi), a three-termer Aklan governor, is strongly ahead against his lone opponent lawyer Anthony Acevedo (PMP-PDP Laban) in the congressional seat.
Miraflores’ victory is imminent despite the pronouncements of Acevedo of the support of the Tres Marias – Victoria Ramos (UNO), Karen Grace Galvan (Partido ng Masang Pilipino) and Maria Bettina Garcia (PDP Laban), all running for governor.
Incumbent Carlito Marquez (Lakas-CMD) is at odds with Ramos and Garcia in the tight gubernatorial race. Galvan is considered the “darkhorse” in the four-cornered fight for governor.
Marquez’ victory would ensure a tight grip in Tibyog Akean dominance for the next six years.
In 1998 and 2001, Tibyog Akean tandem of three-termer Aklan solon Allen Salas-Quimpo and Miraflores dominated the local elections.
Marquez has seven reelectionist mayors – Kalibo, Makato, Lezo, Madalag, Nabas, Malinao and Libacao – out of 17 towns.
Six “graduating” mayors of Tibyog Akean – Numancia, Tangalan, Buruanga, New Washington, Batan and Altavas – had endorsed their spouse, brother or their vice mayor for the mayoral post.
Ramos is supported by incumbent Malay town mayor Ceciron Cawaling while Garcia enjoyed the backing of his husband and Ibajay town mayor Roberto Garcia Jr and Banga mayor Jeremy Fuentes.
In the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (eastern side), four administration bets and an opposition candidate while in the western side, four SP bets from Tibyog Akean and one from the opposition would likely be elected.
Reelectionists Daisy Sucro Briones, Plaridel Morania and Santiago Regalado, lawyer Edmund Peralta and former councilor Franklin Quimpo are shoo-in for SP eastern side seats.
Incumbents Pedro Garcia, Jose Yap, Selywn Ibarreta, Gerick Templonuevo and Ramon Gelito are consistently ahead of the pack in the Western side.
Vice governor-journalist Ronquillo Tolentino is also facing tough challenge from former Aklan solon Gabrielle Calizo (Uno). She is the brother of three-termer Balete town mayor Teodoro Calizo Jr
