No backing out for Aklan guv – Mobo-Garcia
BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

'NOT ME AGAINST MY BROTHER'. The emotional Melrose Garcia-Umali, sister of incumbent Ibajay mayor Roberto Garcia Jr., talks on latest developments on Aklan politics (BRZabal)

KALIBO, Aklan – There is no way to back out.
Maria Bettina ‘Mabeth’ Mobo-Garcia (PDP-Laban) taunted the offer for her to back out of the gubernatorial race.
“I’m in, and I’m in to win. This is a political blackmail for me and the constituents who prodded me to run for governor of Aklan,” she stressed in a press conference in the town of Ibajay over the weekend.
Her statements came after her sister-in-law Melrose Garcia-Umali, revealed the political plans – withdrawal of her aunt Lourdes Martin-Miraflores, who is running for Ibajay town mayor if she also withdraws her candidacy for governor.
Mobo-Garcia is challenging incumbent Gov. Carlito Marquez of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, Dr. Karen Grace Ambito-Galvan of Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) and the United Opposition (UNO) bet Vicky Ramos.
“There is unrest and dissatisfaction in the barangays and they long for change of leadership in the province. We have to move Aklan forward,” she pointed out.
She added she is strongly supporting the candidacy of former congresswoman Gabrielle 'Billie' Calizo of UNO for vice governor instead of incumbent lawyer-journalist Ronquillo Tolentino of Tibyog Akean.
‘PITTED’ AGAINST MY BROTHER
Garcia-Umali said she was convinced by his uncle, Rep. Florencio "Joeben" Miraflores, to run against his younger brother and incumbent mayor Roberto “Jun” Garcia Jr in the May 14 polls.
“I’m undecided at that time and I told him to talk with my mother about the political plans,” said Umali who was in Manila when she was asked two weeks ago to challenge his brother.
Last Tuesday night, she talked with her uncle that her mother, Rosario, ruled out the possibility of seeking an elective post against the reelectionist mayor.
But, Miraflores, according to Umali, asked her to reconsider her decision.
On March 28, a day before the last day of filing of certificate of candidacy, she formally informed Miraflores of the family’s decision.
“I’m sorry that my mother already cried and she doesn’t want us to fight each other,” Garcia-Umali told Miraflores.
CLOSE FAMILY TIES?
Unexpectedly, Lulu Miraflores, wife of his uncle Joeben, filed her certificate of candidacy in Ibajay Comelec on March 29 at 8:40 p.m. for mayor.
Umali said she was surprised that her aunt is pitted against her younger brother Jun.
“I informed uncle Joeben that my mother is feeling very bad of the party’s decision,” she stressed.
She admitted that her family, particularly her mother, is very close to her uncle Joeben and Lulu.
Last Saturday morning, Umali said her mother’s blood pressure rose up and she was spitting blood in the church.
Upon learning of the situation, Victor Monfort-Garcia, who is running for councilor in Ibajay, bolted the ruling coalition Tibyog Akean to support his brother-mayor.
Incumbent mayor Garcia said the 'growing dissatisfaction of municipal mayors against the present leadership is like a volcano ready to unleash its political decision in the crucial midterm polls."
Miraflores is running under Kabalikat ng Mamamayang Pilipino (KAMPI) as provincial chairman against former Manila City Treasurer Anthony Acevedo.

    Hello,

Whoever made the decision to post this picture of Melrose committed an injustice to the good lady from Ibajay. She is more photogenic than this picture.

Definitely this is not the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Melrose is not PGMA. Why follow the unwritten policy of Inquirer on PGMA and apply it to Melrose?
