Local candidates grace peace accord signing

KALIBO, Aklan – The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) sponsored a peace covenant for local candidates of the May 14 elections here.
KBP Aklan chapter chairman Augusto Tolentino said “the peace covenant (tradition) in Aklan started in 1998 that aims for peaceful and honest elections, no personal attacks between candidates, no vote buying and no goons, guns and gold.”
"We urged local politicians to take part in the signing of the peace pact for the peaceful conduct of election this year," he added.
A mass was held today at St. John the Baptist Cathedral officiated by Kalibo Bishop Jose Romeo O. Lazo before the signing of the covenant.
Incumbent Rep. Florencio Miraflores (Kampi) of the lone district of Aklan graced the signing, who is pitted against former Manila City Treasurer Anthony Acevedo (PMP-GO).
Reelectionist Gov. Carlito Marquez is challenging Vicky Ramos (Nacionalista), Maria Bettina Mobo-Garcia (PDP-Laban) and Karen Grace Galvan (PMP).
While incumbent Vice Gov. Ronquillo Tolentino is running against former Aklan solon Gabrielle Calizo of Nacionalista Party-UNO.
In Kalibo, incumbent mayor Raymar Rebaldo is seeking his third term against former vice mayor William Lachica and Apolonio Zaraspe III.
Candidates for the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for the Eastern and Western districts and PNP acting police director Benigno Durana Jr also attended the event.
The signing of the peace covenant is also sponsored by the Diocese of Kalibo, Commission of Elections, Philippine National Police, Aklan United Media Association, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, Philippine Information Agency and Aklan Press Club.
