KALIBO, Aklan – The house of Vice Gov. Ronquillo Tolentino was sprayed with bullets Wednesday evening.
Lawyer-journalist Tolentino, 63, ruled out the possibility of politics or the controversial criminal cases he had handled as reasons behind the strafing of his residence.
"I am surprised of this development. I don't think it is politically motivated… as of now, or could be attributed to criminal cases I handled," said Tolentino, a Tibyog Akean stalwart.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. A man knocked on the steel gate of Tolentino's house located at Capitol Subdivision, about 150 meters from the Aklan Provincial Capitol. The man looked for the vice governor.
The suspect identified himself as Jun Jorque. Ellen, wife of Tolentino and presently the Provincial Human Resource Officer, asked why he was looking for the vice governor.
Tolentino at that time was in his room. From there, he heard from his wife that somebody was looking for him, and thus asked aloud for the man’s name.
This time, the man replied he was Romeo Dela Cruz.
Sensing something not right, Ellen told the man to return the following day. The man walked towards his parked owner type jeep fronting the Pepsi Cola warehouse, about 10 meters away.
Ellen went inside the house.
A few minutes later, the couple heard three gunshot fired. The Tolentino couple was luckily unhurt.
Ellen called the Kalibo PNP for assistance. Responding policemen led by SPO1 Edward Francisco and PO3 Teddy Requeja immediately conducted an investigation.
The following morning, Ellen was surprised to discover that their front door and front window jealousy glass had bullet holes.
According to Chief Insp. Arnold Ardiente, Kalibo police chief, they recovered a slug of a still unknown caliber of firearm.
"We are close to identifying the suspect behind the shooting with the help of witnesses. Tolentino has no known enemies," he said.
The incumbent vice governor is seeking reelection on May 14 with the support of town mayors and barangay captains belonging to Tibyog Akean.
