Battle of sexes looms in Aklan

KALIBO, Aklan - There could be a battle of sexes in Aklan as administration coalition parties - Kabalikat ng Mamamayang Pilipino (Kampi) challenges the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas) and Liberal Party-Atienza wing on the other side in the May 14 elections.
A source disclosed Maria Bettina ‘Mabeth’ Mobo-Garcia is eyeing the congressional post under Kampi, a not-so-surprising move since she is known to be an ally of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and even served as a key supporter of Kasangga ni Gloria in the province.
Mobo-Garcia’s bid was a sign that she was serious in pursuing his campaign to challenge incumbent Aklan Rep. Florencio Miraflores, who defeated former Aklan solon Gabrielle Calizo in the 2004 local election because of the support of Tibyog Akean.
Miraflores, 55, a three-termer Aklan governor from 1995 to 2001, is the uncle of Mabeth’s husband. He is allied with the Liberal Party-Lito Atienza wing.
Lakas-CMD is fielding incumbent Aklan Gov. Carlito Marquez as candidate for governor and incumbent Ronquillo Tolentino for vice governor - part of the united leadership of Tibyog Akean.
The source added, political neophyte Mobo-Garcia would endorse her key ally, Vicky Ramos, for the governorship and Calizo for the vice gubernatorial post for the upcoming local elections.
Ramos, who himself intends to run for governor, had long been pushing for a unity slate composed of her Aklan Independent Movement (AIM) and the Kusog it Akean of Calizo.
Mabeth and Vicky are daughters of politicians. Mobo-Garcia's father, Ben Hur, was a governor of Aklan. His husband Roberto ‘Jun’, is an incumbent mayor of the town of Ibajay . Ramos' late father, Godofredo, served as Congressman and considered the Father of Aklan.
While Gabrielle Calizo is the sister of incumbent Balete town mayor Teodoro ‘Bobby’ Calizo Jr.
Mobo-Garcia, 40, a seasoned banker and a University of the Philippines political science graduate, earlier said they already have potential slates, particularly for the top three posts, but the Tres Marias have yet to finalize them.
She further stressed that her group are shortlisting their candidates to come up with provincial and municipal slate in time for the filing of certificates of candidacy.
Mobo-Garcia said she wants to give the Aklanons an “alternative choice” in the May 14 mid-term elections.
