BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

KALIBO, Aklan – Senior Supt. Benigno Durana Jr wants to ensure an orderly and peaceful celebration of the Kalibo Ati-Atihan festival in honor of Senor Sto. Nino.
The newly installed acting Aklan police director stressed the preparations had been mapped out for a well-organized security force tapping the services of the Philippine Army (PA) and the local police.
With 100 new police recruits from the Regional Mobile Group out to secure the devotees and guests, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who for the second time, would grace the 795th Kalibo Ati-Atihan festival on January 20 to 21, said Mayor Raymar Rebaldo.
“The police have intensified measures for the security of the weeklong festival, which is expected also to draw thousands of tourists,” Durana said.
Last Monday night, 26-year old Raymund Valenzuela, a native of Brgy. Cajilo, Makato, Aklan was stabbed by five suspects during the Makato Ati-Atihan festival near the Makato town hall.
Valenzuela succumbed to multiple stab wounds, the police said. The stabbing incident happened a few meters from the Makato police station when the suspects, mostly teenagers, stabbed the victim, without provocation.
Makato police Insp. Maximo Sumag-eg, former deputy of the Aklan Provincial Mobile Group, said he is on top of the situation in the investigation of the stabbing of Valenzuela.
Durana, who assumed the post of outgoing Supt. William Macavinta last Saturday, also warned the public to be conscious of their security and should be wary of possible bad elements during the festivities.
