Aklan maintains bird flu-free status

KALIBO, Aklan - Aklan is still bird-flu free and so is the entire country, but the different government agencies here tasked to check the bird-flu threat are on alert 24 hours a day.
This was the assurance made by Dr.Gervase Radislao, Provincial Veterinarian, when queried on the status of preparedness of Aklan on the bird flu or Avian flu threat.
Dr. Radislao said that at Caticlan Jetty Port in Malay, Aklan and at the Caticlan Airport, the jump-off point to Boracay Island, quarantine inspectors are present 24 hours a day to watch for incoming fowls and poultry products which might be bird-flu infected, or persons who may be suffering from bird-flu.
Dr. Radislao said that the Kalibo Airport, Dumaguit and other seaports are also closely watched by teams designated by the province to protect the province from this deadly disease caused by birds and fowls.
Government agencies with major tasks to prevent the entry of bird-flu in the country are the Department of Health, Department of Agriculture and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The DOH has declared a nationwide alert against the possible entry of bird flu virus in the country.
According to DOH National epidemiology Center Director Dr. Eric Tayag, the purpose of alert warning issued to prepare the public against the impending threat of bird flu virus.
In Aklan, the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian plays a big role in bird-flu prevention, because its personnel mans the different quarantine areas in major entry pointts in the province, led by Dr. Mabel Sinel of OPVET who is the Deputized Quarantine Officer of the Bureau of Animal Industry, according to Dr. Radislao.
Dr. Radislao also said that the existing "Avian Influenza (AI) Prevention and Control Ordinance of the Province of Aklan" serves as a guide in preventing and controlling possible entry or outbreak of Avian Influenza in the country particularly in the province of Aklan, as well as in planning and implementation of activities of the different agencies and offices for the protection of the poultry industry as well as the health and general welfare of Aklanons.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources here is also constantly monitoring wetland areas in the province which are possible resting areas of migratory birds that pass or stay in the country.
Derlito Rico, Environment Management Specialist and designated Information Officer of DENR-Aklan said, some of the on-going activities their office are undertaking are bird counting in wetland areas, putting up of signage in seaports and airports so the people will be aware of the danger of bird flu, distribution of information materials to the public and tying up with the local media for a more extensive information dissemination.
