‘Super regions’ good for tourism
By BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

BORACAY – This island-resort will benefit immensely from the national government’s plan to create “super regions,” said Aklan Vice Gov. Ronquillo Tolentino.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo wants to develop central Philippines into a booming tourism and investment hub, with the major tourism destinations of Boracay, Cebu, Iloilo and Bohol as part of the “four super-regions.”
“Aklan would have a role in agriculture and tourism. The mega zones shall concentrate on regional areas of investments,” Tolentino stressed.
The super regions are Central Philippines (Regions 4-B, 5, 6, 7 and 8); Mindanao (Regions 9, 10, 11, 12, Caraga and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao); Metro Manila (Regions 3, 4-A and the National Capital Region) and North Luzon (Regions 1, 2, Cordillera Autonomous Region, Aurora and Nueva Ecija).
According to Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, “the super regions would give the citizenry a preview of how it is to live under a regime of political equity and a prelude to the eventual decentralization of political power under the aegis of Charter reform.”
Tolentino said the plan to create “super regions” would push upward economic growth and tourism opportunities especially in Boracay Island, which the national government wants to be at par with the world’s best resorts such as Bali in Indonesia and Pukhet in Thailand.
“The regions to be set up would attract more domestic and foreign investors and ensure implementation support for tourism projects in Central Philippines,” the vice governor added.
