KALIBO, Aklan – Acting provincial police director Supt. Remus Canieso confirmed the proliferation of illegal gambling activities in five towns.
The five municipalities are Kalibo, Numancia, Libacao, Ibajay and Malay, Canieso said.Apparently, the gambling financiers continue violating the laws despite the massive campaign of the local police.
Canieso described the illegal gambling operations in these towns as “hit and run” – the gambling operators would stop when there are police operations and would resume their illegal activities when the cops are gone.
Canieso assured the public that “the police are closely monitoring their guerilla-type operations.”
Canieso and the chiefs of police of the towns were invited by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of Aklan last Wednesday. The Provincial Board assessed the police’s anti-illegal gambling performance.
Canieso’s admission came in the heels of the strong opposition of the legislative body to the proposed operation of the Small-Town Lottery (STL) in Capiz.
SP Members Plaridel Morania and Ramon Gelito said they were worried.
Canieso described the illegal gambling operations in the towns as “organized” and “full-blown.”
“We remind the chiefs of police of their duty to stamp out illegal gambling activities in their jurisdictions by conducting aggressive operations,” he stressed.
