BORACAY -– Aklan Gov. Carlito Marquez said he will be asking the regional trial court in Aklan to come out fast with a decision on the provincial ordinance mandating the one entry, one exit scheme for this island.
“"The scheme aims to reinforce the security in Boracay,"” the governor stressed over DYRG Budyong following intelligence reports of terrorist attack plans in tourist destinations in the country.
Malay Mayor Ceciron Cawaling questioned the legality of the ordinance, saying it usurped the functions and powers of the local government of Malay under the Local Government Code of 1991.
Last April, the one entry, one entry scheme was temporarily suspended and instead, a multiple entry, one exit was adopted by the local government of Malay; incoming passengers pass the Caticlan jetty port and can disembark in three designated boat stations in the White Beach.
A police intelligence report had it that the Southeast Asia-based Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist organization will launch a series of attacks after suicide bombers slipped into the country. The terrorist group carried out the October 12, 2002 Bali blasts that killed 202 people.
Planned suicide bombings in popular tourist destinations in the country were uncovered by the police. The regional militant network Jemaah Islamiyah would carry out the attack with the help of the Abu Sayyaf.
For his part, Cong. Florencio Miraflores said the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Coast Guard should coordinate and map out plans to secure the island, being the top destination for foreign and local tourists.
"There should be intensified security measures in the island to guarantee the tourists’ safety,"” Miraflores said over DYRU Super Radyo Kalibo.
