BORACAY – The Boracay Special Tourist Protection Office (BSTPO) welcomed the appointment of Gen. Oscar Calderon as director of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Calderon, a native of Nueva Ecija, replaced Gen. Arturo Lomibao who was instrumental in the construction of P10-million world-class police station in this resort island, and the deployment of some 100 tourist-trained policemen to ensure the safety of tourists and residents here.
"Calderon is a competent officer and he deserves the post,"” said BSTPO Chief Insp. Jess Mendez.
He expects Calderon to continue the transformation of PNP for the better.During his stint as PNP Director, Lomibao personally visited Boracay to ensure the security of tourists through regular consultations and dialogues with non-government organizations and local officials.
He was also credited for the smooth security preparations of the PNP for the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) delegates on April 2005 and the visits of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the island.
Calderon, who will retire on October 1, 2007, is the former chief directorial staff of the PNP and Central Luzon PNP regional commander from 2002 to 2003, where he was awarded in 2002 as the nation's "Most Outstanding PNP Regional Commander of the Year."
A member of Philippine Military Academy Class '73, Calderon spent 10 years fighting insurgents and secessionist rebels as company commandeer in Maguindanao, and headed the Presidential Anti-Crime and Emergency Response (PACER).
