The multi-million regional evacuation center
in Kalibo, Aklan is nearing completion and will soon accommodate evacuees in
times of calamities.
The disaster-resilient center is built in a
lot donated by the municipal government of Kalibo in Sitio Bukid Tigayon in
Barangay Tigayon, few meters from Tigayon Hill.
The two-storey buildings are designed to
accommodate around 33 families during disasters and calamities. The evacuation
center also has infirmary building, material recovery facility, laundry area,
pharmacy for quick medical response and other facilities for temporary shelter of
displaced residents from flood prone areas of Kalibo and neighboring municipalities.
Aside from Kalibo evacuation center, eight centers
in Western Visayas are also being constructed by DPWH with a budget amounting to
P310-million. Other evacuation centers are located in Zarraga and Carles in
Iloilo; San Jose de Buenavista in Antique; Roxas City in Capiz; Nueva Valencia
in Guimaras; and Bago City, Sagay City and San Carlos City in Negros
Occidental.
The P33-million facility funded by the
national government through Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will
be turned over to the municipal government of Kalibo next month.
Kalibo mayor William Lachica said the
facility will be inaugurated during the Ati-Atihan festival this January.
