BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

The town of Calivo, now Kalibo, will celebrate its 447th foundation day on November 3. Kalibo, a first-class municipality, is the capital town of the province of Aklan.

November 3, 1571 was declared as Kalibo’s foundation day by virtue of Municipal Ordinance No. 2005-049 on October 6, 2005 and instituted the celebration of Kalibo Day every November 3.

Kalibo mayor William Lachica leads the meaningful celebration and activities lined up for the foundation day including cultural show of Kalibo Districts I and II, agri-trade fair ‘Tienda sa Kalibo’, employees’ sportsfest, kasalan ng bayan, Buntis Congress, Obra Karatola Insigida Kalibo (OKI Kalibo) and business forum.

Quoting the research output of Professor John Barrios, it was known that Kalibo started its system of government as an encomienda given to Antonio Flores on November 3, 1571.

“It appeared in the notarized Spanish document dated June 2, 1576 that November 3, 1571 was the first written date relating to the Spanish colonial administration in Aclan/Calivo under the encomienda system instituted by the first Governor and Captain - General Miguel Lopez de Legazpi,” Barrios said in his research output entitled “Calivo: The Founding of a Town.”
