Kalibo water district taps LWUA to develop water sources

BY BOY RYAN B. ZABAL

The Metro Kalibo Water District (MKWD) has sought the assistance of Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) to expand and develop other water sources in the province of Aklan.

MKWD sources its water requirements to provide potable water supply to consumers of Kalibo, Banga, New Washington and portions of Batan and Balete with its  pumping stations along Aklan river bank.

LWUA administrator Jeci Lapuz discussed the proposals with MKWD general manager Edmund Peralta and Aklan governor Florencio Miraflores to look for new sources like surface water from Aklan river.

LWUA has urged water districts to shift from underground water to surface water as well as to stop ground development and drilling for the next 10 years.

In a study, the available groundwater supply in the country is depleting or barely adequate to provide clean water with the growing population in urban areas and the continuing modernization of local economy.

The water facility cited the rising demand for water of residents and establishments in the capital town of Kalibo and the neighboring town of New Washington.

MKWD also sourced potable water supply with Datem Water, which uses filtration technology in its Tinigaw pumping station in Kalibo, Aklan. The large water district in Aklan with more than 28,000 water connections also engaged in the supply of bulk water to Numancia Water District.

Meanwhile, Miraflores also asked LWUA the feasibility of a surface water supply loan grants to address the growing service connections of Ibajay Water District in Ibajay, Aklan.
